As the House of Lords considers the Trade Union Bill in committee stage, trade union members across the country will begin a week of action to celebrate the great work done by unions and send a clear message to peers that this vindictive Bill should be stopped.
Actions will include a Big Workplace Meeting on 9th February and a Community Day of Action on 11th February which are both opportunities to highlight the value of unions both at work and in communities.
The Bill is receiving increasing criticism from all sides, with the House of Lords setting up a committee to examine party funding, as changes to political fund rules have been condemned as a blatant attack on Labour Party funding. Ex-civil service head, Bob Kerslake, also criticised the Bill’s extreme measures which “demonstrate a worrying authoritarian streak in this government that is not comfortable with scrutiny and challenge”.
The heart unions week is an opportunity for every union member to raise their objections to the Bill and support their union, whether it be joining a workplace meeting, signing the TUC’s petition, asking a colleague to join a union or even adding the heart unions logo to your facebook profile.
Union reps are encouraged to plan activities throughout the week and can find resources online at the heart unions website.
Members can also contact PCS regional offices to find out about planned activities near them.
