We all deserve a fully-funded 5% pay rise, is the message from a day of PCS payday activities being planned across the UK on 28 February to increase the pressure on the government over pay.
PCS has called for talks with the Cabinet Office over our 2018 pay claim which calls for:
- a fully-funded 5% pay rise
- a Living Wage of £10 an hour
- pay equality across the civil service, and
- a common pay and grading structure.
In November, tens of thousands of PCS members sent a powerful message to the government in our consultative ballot on pay to act to scrap the 1% public sector pay cap and fund above inflation pay rises.
Our members across the UK have continued to give their support to our campaign by holding a series of successful, popular payday protests over the last few months, most recently on 31 January, using the PCS pay calculator to highlight how much they have lost under the civil service pay cap. Many branches calculated that their members had lost hundreds of thousands of pounds. We calculated that the pay freeze and cap has cost the UK economy nearly £1.7 billion.
Pay struggle
Many PCS members have been struggling to make ends meet as we enter the eighth year of the attack on civil service pay.
We need all branches and members across the civil service to support the latest payday protest to keep the pressure on the government over pay. To support this we are launching a new pay petition to target new Cabinet Office minister David Lidington with our pay demands. We are also relaunching our pay calculator to allow members to share their losses with him and demand that he delivers fully-funded, above inflation pay rises for all. Our regional/national centres will also be urging members to sign ‘big’ petitions on the day to be sent to the government.
We are also encouraging all branches to lobby their MP in their constituency office on Friday, 2 March. There will also be a pay rally in the House of Commons at 6pm on 6 March. Members who are unable to lobby their MP in person are encouraged to complete our e-action to urge them to attend our rally, to support our pay claim and commit to lobby ministers to end the pay cap and fully fund above inflation increases.
We are also holding another Facebook Live event on 13 March, featuring shadow chancellor John McDonnell and PCS general secretary Mark Serwotka, who will give their response to that day’s spring statement by chancellor Philip Hammond.
PCS is also supporting a TUC march and rally on public sector pay on 12 May.
