Dear ___________MP
I am writing to you as a constituent, but also as a member of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS), to ask that you meet with me to discuss my unions current pay campaign.
As a civil servant I have suffered almost a decade of pay restraint as well as relentless attacks on my terms and conditions, pension and redundancy rights and I believe that it is time that civil servants are given a fair, decent and deserving pay rise.
As you will be aware, civil servants perform key roles within society and are an integral part of the day to day functionality of the country. PCS members work across all Government Departments, our members protect UK borders, deliver benefits, conduct driving tests, collect tax, provide legal advice and assistance in courts as well as providing security across the Parliamentary estate. Many of us are currently engaged with Brexit preparations too.
The 1% cap was lifted for the rest of the public sector in 2017-18 but has remained in place for UK civil servants with Government Ministers imposing pay remit guidance at 1-1.5% for all departments in 2018. Recent independent research has shown that civil service average pay fell in value by comparison with the rest of the public sector by between 13.6%(RPI) and 9.8%(CPI). These cuts in my salary in real terms can’t continue.
My Union is also seeking a new national pay system of collective bargaining across the civil service to replace the current mess of over 200 pay bargaining units which leads to unfairness and inequality.
I am therefore asking that you meet with me to discuss my concerns at your earliest convenience. Civil servants and all public sector staff are hardworking and dedicated and I believe, as does my union, that we all deserve a pay rise that addresses these years of injustice and austerity.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
