Help build PCS in your workplace
February 2016
If you would like to get more involved in your union’s work but do not hold a formal representative role then register as a PCS union advocate to help build PCS in your workplace.
There are many ways that you can get involved and it doesn’t have to take up a lot of your time.
Being an advocate is an important job to build our union. In our recent strategic review, hundreds of members said they would like to get more involved in the union’s work.
If you are already a distributor of PCS materials then we would recommend that you become an advocate.
There are a number of things you can do as an advocate, such as:
- Attend, participate, and encourage others to go to your branch annual general meeting (AGM) which should be taking place around this time. This is an important meeting that elects your branch committee, decides on nominations at group and national level, and decides on motions to put forward to change union policy.
- Do you know anyone who is not a member of PCS? If so, talk to them about the good work the union does and encourage them to join.
- Vote in elections – Elections are coming up for group and national posts. You could also encourage your colleagues to vote. These elections are important as they decide who will lead the union over the next year.
- Distribute materials – this is not an onerous task as a lot of information is sent out electronically, but occasionally we need to get our message out in print. You should also read materials and encourage others to read them and feedback views to your PCS branch.
- Do you have a specific talent? Are you a whizz with websites, excellent on Excel spreadsheets or do you have an aptitude for art? If so, get in touch and you could help with our communications and records.
We appreciate any help you can give to building PCS in your workplace.
